TROPHIES AND AWARDS
Provided by Kern County Rose Society and donations from members and friends. A list of donors will be on display at the trophy table.
The
concept of this show is to encourage the fellowship derived from the shared
roses all over the state of California, and not just in Bakersfield and Kern
County.
It
is well known a very large percentage of the roses sold all over the nation are
grown within Kern County, California.

ENTRY RULES
1.
This show adheres to the rules laid down by the AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY
for organizing a Rose Show
as specified in the American Rose Society “Guide
lines for Judging Roses”.
2.
This rose show is open to all rose gardeners.
All roses entered in this show
must have been grown in the exhibitor’s outdoor garden.
The exhibitor need
not be a member of a Rose
Society. (Members of recognized youth groups may
have a garden away from their home.)
3.
ALL EXHIBITORS MUST REGISTER at the registration desk. Entries will
be recived May 2, 2009 from 6:00 am to 9:30 am. Judging will
begain at about 10:00am
4.
NOVICE is defined as
those persons who have never won a trophy in an American Rose
Society sanctioned Rose Show.
5.
Vases will be furnished by the show sponsors.
6.
Only ARS entry tags are acceptable, securely folded before entries are
placed.
Only the upper portion of the entry tag must be completed. Blue or
black ball
point pen only
7.
Only ONE exhibitor (or one team) from any one garden may enter any class
for
which they are qualified. More
than one entry of the same variety from the same
garden in any one class will disqualify both entries. All exhibits
must be the
work of the exhibitor only.
8.
The responsibility for proper identification and classification lies
totally with the
exhibitor, HOWEVER, ALL POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE WILL BE AVAILABLE
by means of current recognized publications and our own Consulting
Rosarians.
9.
All entries must be entered under the ARS official exhibition
names; however,
exhibitors may also include a rose’s commercial name on the entry tag.
10.
This is an alphabetically arranged show.
Each variety will constitute a separate
group within the class and will be judged on its merits for the variety.
Combinations of varieties will be judged as one group.
11.
All multiple stem entries are to be one variety unless stated otherwise.
12.
Wedging or supports may be used. Clear plastic wrap, aluminum foil or
other
non-distracting material
may be used. Wedging protruding
above the lip of the
vase is subject to penalization.
13.
AVOID DISQUALIFICATION – Be careful of the following: A rose entry is
disqualified if it is:
*Misnamed;
*Misclassed;
*Misplaced;
*Unlabeled or Mislabeled (including omission of the exhibitors name or its location anywhere but where specified);
*Stem-on-stem, except Old Garden Roses and
Shrubs;
*Foreign substance on foliage, stem, or bloom;
*Not disbudded in classes requiring one bloom per stem;
*Violation of show rules, an entry in
Violation of ARS or local show rules;
*Improperly named roses: Roses must be listed in the most current
editions
of the American Rose Society
publications with ARS exhibition names to
be eligible for entry in ARS authorized rose shows, i.e. Modern Roses,
International Rose
Registrations Supplements to date, Official List of
Approved Exhibition Names for Judges & Exhibitors,
Handbook for
Selecting Roses, American Rose magazine and the Combined Rose List.
(In
case of conflict between
The Combined Rose List and ARS Publications,
ARS publications will be the final authority).
In case of disqualification or severe penalization, the judges will write
the reason
on the entry tag.
14.
Neither the KERN COUNTY ROSE SOCIETY, Inc., nor the COUNTY OF KERN
assumes
any responsibility for loss of, or damage to, personal property; how
ever, care will be exercised to protect exhibits on display.
15.
Trophies will be awarded to the best in each class or section Saturday,
May 2 2009
at 2:00 pm. All winners
should be present to accept their awards.
Rosettes will remain with the show until closing; those not picked up 30
min
utes after closing will be mailed to the exhibitor.
16.
Trophies will be awarded to Queen, King, Princess, Mini Queen, Mini King,
and Mini Princess, Dowager
Queen and Victorian Award. Best in
each Class
will receive a trophy. The
court of honor will receive Rosettes. The
best entry
of a novice who is a member of the Kern County Rose Society, Inc. will
receive
the Walter Stiern perpetual
trophy. All classes where an American Rose Soci-
ety
Certificate is appropriate will receive the certificate.
Trophies will be awarded
only to first place winners. Judges
decisions are final.
17. After
judging begins no individual not involved in the judging process will be allowed
in the exhibition area.
18.
The judges entry is open to ARS judges & family members judging
this show.
Horticultural judges who
are judging the horticultural division may also enter
the arrangement division.

ARTISTIC DESIGN
DIVISION
RULES FOR ARRANGEMENT EXHIBITORS
1.
The Rose Show will be governed and judged by the rules, regulations and
guidelines of the American
Rose Society, as set forth in the Guidelines for
Judging Rose Arrangements.
2.
The Arrangement Division is open to any amateur exhibitor.
Exhibitors need
not be a member of the Kern County Rose Society however, the Gena Uhalt
Perpetual Award is only open to a member of the KCRS.
3.
The show will be held at the Norris Road Veterans Hall, Bakersfield, CA,
Saturday,
May 2, 2009. The arrangement exhibition area will open Saturday, May 2 at
7
am. Entries will be accepted until 9:30 am.
Judging will begin at 10 am. No
late
entries will be allowed. The
show will be open for viewing at the completion
of judging. Arrangers will be advised at entry time when they may
pick up their
arrangements, containers and other properties. No entries may be removed
before the time specified.
NOTE: Those arrangers who will not be in attendance at show take down
should make arranngements to have someone pick
up their arrangement, containers
and other properties who will take responability for there return.
4.
Staging: STANDARD ARRANGEMENTS.
For all standard arrangements,
30’ wide tables will be placed against walls that are covered with a
neutral beigecloth,
which provides the
background for the staging area. The
table tops will be covered
with a white tablecloth. Each
individual arrangement will be allotted 30” in width;
therefore, each standard arrangement entry will have a table top surface
area of 30” x
30”
MINIATURE ARRANGEMENTS.
For all miniature arrangements 30” wide
tables will be placed
against walls with a stepped riser placed on the table.
The
stepped staging will be
covered with white tablecloths which provides the
background
for the staging area. The table
tops will be covered with
tablecloths.. Arrangements will be allotted 12” in width.
5.
All roses must be outdoor garden grown and must be of high quality
6.
Names of all roses in each arrangement must be written on the entry tag.
All roses must be correctly named in accordance with the latest edition
of
Modern Roses, Handbook for Selecting Roses, Combined Rose List or the
New
Rose Registrations in the AMERICAN ROSE.
All roses must be exhibited under
their ARS Exhibition Names. A
rose variety need not be registered with the
ARS to be exhibited in this
show, but must be listed in the ARS recognized
publication. ARS publication
take priority over Combined Rose List.
7.
A rose or roses must be the
dominant flower in all arrangements.
8.
American Rose Society Medal Certificates may be awarded to arrangements
using arranger grown, fresh roses. Entry

The Judges Section are not eligible for the Medal Certificates.

One entry per exhibitor is allowed in each class but, the exhibitor may
enter as many classes as desired.
10.
Accessories are not allowed unless stated otherwise in this schedule.
Flowers other than roses and dried and/or treated dried plant material
are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule.
Natural wood (dried, weathered, treated, etc.) is considered dried
plant material unless it has been made into an art object, i.e. a statue.
It is then considered an accessory.
11.
A card of intent may be included with an arrangement as an explanation of
the arranger’s interpretation of the theme or class title.
12.
The exhibitors are responsible for placing their own arrangements.
An arrangement incorrectly placed in one class when it should have been
placed in another will be judged in the class in which it has been placed.
13.
Each exhibit must be the work of a single exhibitor.
14.
No one but the exhibitor may touch or move an arrangement.
15.
Plant material other than roses may be commercially grown.
All roses must be fresh, except for those classes which specify
dried roses.
16.
In classes for miniature arrangements, the design must conform to the
size specified on each class and ONLY those roses classified by the ARS
as miniature or mini-flora™ may be used.
17.
Backgrounds, niches and underlays may be used, if desired, but must be
provided by the exhibitor. There are no height restrictions for standard arrangements
but, all parts of the arrangement must be confined within the allotted surface
space. In miniature arrangements,
backgrounds, niches and underlays are a component of the design and must conform
to any size limitation.
18.
Purple ribbon winners must score 90 or higher.
To be eligible for American Rose Society Awards, arrangements must score
no less than 92 points. Only purple
ribbon winners are eligible for American Rose Society Awards.
19.
Arranger’s names should be on the bottom of containers, etc.
Neither the Kern County Rose nor the COUNTY OF KERN assumes
responsibility for the loss of, or damage to personal property; however, care
will be exercised to protect exhibits.
20.
By entering this show given under ARS rules, exhibitors agree to abide by
those rules.
21.
Arrangement Judges who are judging this show may only enter in the Judges
Section “G”.
22.
All winners are requested to be present at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 2
to accept their trophies or make specific arrangements for their
acceptance and delivery
23.
In addition to the appropriate ARS awards, a permanent trophy will be
awarded to the best entry in each section.
Infringement of the
following rules will result in severe penalty
1.
Painted or dyed fresh plant materials, and live creatures are not
allowed.
2.
The use of plant materials on the state or local conservation lists is
not permitted.
3.
The American flag or flag of any country may not be used in an
arrangement or as a decoration in any way.
There are but two
causes for disqualification of an arrangement:
1.
Roses are not outdoor grown.
2.
Use of artificial plant material.
