TROPHIES AND AWARDS

      Provided by Kern County Rose Society and donations from members and friends.  A list of donors will be on display at the trophy table.

The concept of this show is to encourage the fellowship derived from the shared roses all over the state of California, and not just in Bakersfield and Kern County. 

It is well known a very large percentage of the roses sold all over the nation are grown within Kern County, California.

ENTRY RULES

1.     This show adheres to the rules laid down by the AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY   for organizing a Rose Show as specified in the American Rose Society “Guide lines for Judging Roses”.

 

2.     This rose show is open to all rose gardeners.  All roses entered in this show must have been grown in the exhibitor’s outdoor garden.  The exhibitor need                               not be a member of a Rose Society.  (Members of recognized youth groups may have a garden away from their home.)

 

3.     ALL EXHIBITORS MUST REGISTER at the registration desk. Entries will  be    recived May 3, 2008 from 6:00 am to 9:30 am. Judging will begain at about            10:00am

 

4.     NOVICE  is defined as those persons who have never won a trophy in an American Rose Society sanctioned Rose Show.

 

5.     Vases will be furnished by the show sponsors except in Class 42 in which the exhibitor will furnish his/her own container and will be responsible for its

        placement on the show table.

 

6.     Only ARS entry tags are acceptable, securely folded before entries are placed.  Only the upper portion of the entry tag must be completed. Blue or black ball                point pen only

 

7.     Only ONE exhibitor (or one team) from any one garden may enter any class for which they are qualified.  More than one entry of the same variety from the same         garden in any one class will disqualify both entries. All exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor only.

 

8.     The responsibility for proper identification and classification lies totally with the exhibitor, HOWEVER, ALL POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE WILL BE AVAILABLE by means of current recognized publications and our own Consulting Rosarians.

 

9.     All entries must be entered under the ARS official exhibition names; however, exhibitors may also include a rose’s commercial name on the entry tag.

 

10.   This is an alphabetically arranged show.  Each variety will constitute a separate group within the class and will be judged on its merits for the variety. 

        Combinations of varieties will be judged as one group.

 

11.   All multiple stem entries are to be one variety unless stated otherwise.

 

12.   Wedging or supports may be used. Clear plastic wrap, aluminum foil or other non-distracting material may be used. Wedging  protruding above the lip of the                 vase is subject to penalization.

 

13.   AVOID DISQUALIFICATION – Be careful of the following: A rose entry is

        disqualified if it is:
       
*Misnamed;
       
*Misclassed;
        *Misplaced;
       
*Unlabeled or Mislabeled (including omission of the exhibitors name  or  its location anywhere but where specified);
       
*Stem-on-stem, except Old Garden Roses and  Shrubs;
       
*Foreign substance on foliage, stem, or bloom;
       
*Not disbudded in classes requiring one bloom per stem;

     
*Violation of show rules, an entry in Violation of ARS or local show rules;
       
*Improperly named roses: Roses must be listed in the most current editions of  the American Rose Society publications with ARS exhibition names to                        be eligible for entry in ARS authorized rose shows, i.e. Modern Roses,

         International Rose Registrations Supplements to date, Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Judges & Exhibitors,  Handbook for Selecting Roses, American Rose magazine and the Combined Rose List. (In case of conflict between The Combined Rose List and ARS Publications, ARS publications will be the final authority).

        In case of disqualification or severe penalization, the judges will write the reason on the entry tag. 

 

14.   Neither the KERN COUNTY ROSE SOCIETY, Inc., nor the COUNTY OF KERN assumes any responsibility for loss of, or damage to, personal property; however, care will be exercised to protect exhibits on display.

 

15.   Trophies will be awarded to the best in each class or section Saturday, May 3 2008  at  2:00 pm. All winners should be present to accept their awards. 

        Rosettes will remain with the show until closing; those not picked up 30 minutes after closing will be mailed to the exhibitor.

 

16.   Trophies will be awarded to Queen, King, Princess, Mini Queen, Mini King, and Mini Princess, Dowager Queen and Victorian Award.  Best in each Class             will receive a trophy.  The court of honor will receive Rosettes.  The best entry of a novice who is a member of the Kern County Rose Society, Inc. will receive the Walter Stiern perpetual trophy.  All classes where an American Rose Society Certificate is appropriate will receive the certificate.  Trophies will be awarded only to first place winners.  Judges decisions are final.

 

17.   After judging begins no individual not involved in the judging process will be allowed in the exhibition area.

 

18.   The judges entry is open to ARS judges & family members judging this show. Horticultural judges who are judging the horticultural division may also enter   the arrangement division.

 

 

SECTION A

CHALLENGE CLASS

      In Classes 1 through 6, exhibitors  shall place their own entry.  Each  entry will be allotted space approprate to the size of the entry.

 

Class 1

        HYBRID TEA CYCLE OF BLOOM,  THREE STEMS of the same variety showing three stages of development; one bud, sepals down and petals beginning to unfurl, one approximately one-half open or in its most perfect phase of beauty, and one fully open bloom, stamens  showing, displayed in separate containers. 

        Award: Trophy for best in class and KCRS certificate.

 

Class 2 

         CLASSIC  HYBRID TEA ROSES, THREE STEMS without side buds, shown in separate containers, each a different variety.  Hybrid Tea roses introduced between 1867 to 1960. Date of introduction MUST appear in the upper right hand corner of the entry tag.     

        Award: Trophy for best in class and KCRS certificate.

Class 3 

        OLD GARDEN ROSES, as designated in ARS publications, FIVE STEMS, each a different variety, shown in separate containers.  Date and                                 Type must be listed on the entry tag in the upper right-hand corner. (Including roses of unknown date known to have been in existence before or after 1867.)

        Award: Trophy for best in class and KCRS certificate.

Class 4 

        FLORIBUNDA SPRAYS, FIVE  SPRAYS, each a different variety, displayed in  separate containers.

        Award: Trophy for best in class and KCRS certificate.

 

Class 5

         MODERN SHRUB ROSES, as designated in ARS publications,

        FIVE STEMS, shown  one bloom per stem or spray, introduced after 1960.  Shown  in separate containers, each a different variety.

        Award: Trophy for best in class and KCRS certificate.

Class 6

        LOOK ALIKES---  ONE exhibition stage HT, G. or FL and ONE Miniature/ Mini- Flora that look alike in color and form: displayed in separate containers .

        One entry per garden.

        Award: Trophy for best in class and ARS certificate.

Hybrid Teas and Grandiflora

Class 7

         ONE Hybrid Tea or Grandiflora BLOOM, displaying exhibition form, without side buds.

Class 8

        ONE Hybrid Tea or Grandiflora BLOOM FULLY OPENED without sidebuds. Stamens must be showing. No single varieties

Class 11

        MOST FRAGRANT Hybrid Tea or  Grandiflora BLOOM - One bloom without sidebuds.

Class 12

        exhibition form, without foliage. One variety or a combination of varieties.

        ONE DECORATIVE Hybrid Tea or Grandiflora BLOOM, Including SINGLE

        varieties (4 > 8 petals) or any other varieties which do not compete in Class“7”

Class 14

        ONE Hybrid Tea or  Grandiflora SPRAY. Must have two (2) or more blooms and may have sidebuds.

Decorative form:

Hybrid Tea, Grandiflora and Miniatures,of a variety that usually present blooms without the high-pointed centers associated with “exhibition form”. Instead of a symmetrial spiral of petals, they may display a more informal confguration. An occasional bloom of any variety may demonstrate the high pointed center, and consequently, that bloom may have the “exhibitition form” necessary to reach the court of honor. However the decorative form does not normally present with “exhibition form”.

      Note:  Introduced 1867 through 1960, Date of introduction MUST appear on the entry tags in the upper right corner.       Classic Shrubs are those shrubs which have family designations, i.e.----  Hybrid moyesii, hybrid musk, hybrid rugosa, kordessii, etc. as identified in ARS publications. Family designation must be placed at the top right hand corner of the entry tag
