Red hot- is what this fire engine red miniature rose
is, bred by Frank Benardella of New Jersey.
It was awarded the American Rose Society’s Award of Excellence
for 2006. In the two years
since its introduction, this rose has proven itself to be an excellent new
garden and exhibition miniature rose. ‘Caliente’ grows very well in the Bakersfield
area. Unlike many of the
newer miniature rose introductions, this variety is exceptionally well
balance in its blooms and foliage. Additionally,
the plant has a pleasant rounded habit and produces blooms carried nicely
above the disease resistant medium to dark green foliage.
Because of this tidy habit, ‘Caliente’ makes a superb miniature
tree rose. The bloom cycle is
quick, so that the plant is rarely out of bloom. What I like most about this rose is its beautiful
dark velvety red well-formed blooms.
It looks like the perfect red rose for a miniature beauty queen’s
award bouquet. All of the above characteristics are what led me to include this important new rose in my own rose breeding program. If you are interested in one of the very best red miniature roses for our climate, this is it! - Jim Sproul
